Sofia Highlights – Historical Places

- The big complex of the buildings in the very centre of the city – “The Largo”
Here you will see the buildings of the Presidency, The Council of Ministers and the former House of the Party – the building of the late Bulgarian Communist Party, where were the offices of the ruling top of the communist Bulgaria including the office of Todor Zhivkov – the totalitarian ruler of the state for more than 30 years. Here are also the buildings of Sheraton Sofia Hotel Balkan and Central Department Store.
And the most interesting thing is that under the ground of this region of the city was situated the  central part of the ancient Serdica – Remains of the streets, gates and towers can be seen in the subway in front of the Presidency.


- The former Tsar’s Palace – on the northern side of the biggest squire of the capital – Battenberg Square / Alexander Josef fon Battenberg is the first royal prince of the new Bulgarian State (1879 - 1886) after the Liberation from the domination of the Ottoman Empire. Today it houses the National Art Gallery and The Ethnographic Museum.


 

- The massive building on the west – Bulgarian National Bank  and the building of the Ministry of Defence on the east with the small park between them marc the place where stood the Mausoleum of Georgi Dimitrov  - It kept the embalmed body of the leader of the Bulgarian Communist Party. It was destroyed in 1999.


- The building of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria – The Parliament

- The Building of the National Library bearing the name of the two brothers Cyril and Methodius – the creators of the Slavonic – Bulgarian alphabet /The third officially recognized alphabet in the European Union/.

- The building of the Central Mineral Baths /under reconstructions/.

- The building of the Central Covered Market - Hali

- St Sophia Church
- The Rotunda – Church of St. George
- Church of St. Nikolas – The Russian Church
- The Church of St. Nedelya – Sveti Kral
- The small church of St. Petka of Saddlers
- The Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevski – The patriarchal temple of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church – one of the biggest Orthodox churches in the world.
-  The only Sofia Synagogue
-  The only Sofia Mosque – Banya Bashi Mosque – erected in 1576.


Monuments
- The Monument to the Unknown Soldiers
- The Monument to Vasil Levski – The National hero of Bulgaria
- The Monument to the Tsar Liberator – a monument devoted to Russian Emperor Alexander the Second, Russian soldiers and Bulgarian voluntaries that brought the victory in the War of Liberation (1878 – 1879)
- The Monument to the Soviet Army – a monument from the time of the communism in Bulgaria.
